Mens Vets Section
First off don’t be misled by our title, as we are an active group of golfers, who are young at heart, albeit that we range in age from 60 to over 90 years of age, and our handicaps range from low single figures to “very high”.
We are proud to be “Veteran Golfers” (other clubs may call us “Seniors”) and our membership currently stands around 140 but there is always room for more.
Membership is open to all men who are Club members and are at least 60 years old. Our subscription is £10 per year for which we offer a comprehensive programme of weekly ‘roll-ups’, inter-Club Matches, Competitions and Social Events. Members who are either new to the club and / or the Vets Section can get assistance to find new playing partners via the regular Wednesday morning ‘roll up’. A game is guaranteed if you turn up between 07:45 – 08:45 at the 1st Tee Starter’s Hut, where a dedicated ‘bagman’ will help with allocation of playing groups. You will then be able to get to know other Vets when you return to the clubhouse for a well-earned beverage and lunchtime snack.
Inter-Club Matches against Vets or Seniors sections at other local clubs, provide a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and play a wide variety of great courses for the cost of a meal and a few drinks. From the middle of March, through to the first week in October, we have the pleasure of playing 39 matches against many of the other premier clubs in the area, and after a short break it’s time to start playing the 10 interclub matches in the Wessex Winter League which runs from the middle of November through to the middle of February. All members of the section are welcome to ‘sign up’ their availability to play in these fixtures.
Throughout the summer there are a myriad of club competitions to enter with trophies and prizes available. There is also opportunity to invite friends along to the club to participate in our flagship event – the Vets Invitation, which draws players to Alresford from Hampshire and further afield. We also join with the Ladies Section on two occasions during the year for a friendly but fiercely competitive social golf event and also play an event with our Junior Section.
We are not only about the golf as in October each year we enjoy the Vets and Partners Dinner to recount the successes of the season.
For many people the Vet’s Section is a passport to friendship, great golf and camaraderie. Don’t miss out on the opportunity – come and join us – contact details for the current Vets Captain and committee members is on the Vets section noticeboard in the entrance to the Men’s Changing Rooms. If in doubt please speak to the Club Secretary.
